Understanding requirements for drivers

How is the driver's profile verified?

Before the driver can take the car, they will need to have Getaround verify their profile. In order for us to verify their profile, we ask them for a copy of their driving licence and their DVLA code. For non-Getaround Connect rentals, you will also need to make additionnal checks.

The driver will be able to request a profile verification as soon as they book. We recommend they do it right away to make sure they will be ready on D-Day. If the driver hasn't had their profile verified yet, you will be able to see it on the rental page: go to Your rentals and then click on the relevant rental.

Foreign Licences

To hire and drive a Getaround vehicle in the UK with a foreign licence, the driver must first meet all our rental conditions. Depending on the country that issued the licence, you will also have to check and take photos of any additional documents at check-in, as well as the driver’s driving licence.

The licence must be issued by a country in the European Economic Area (EU list of countries + Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and must be valid without any additional documents.

If the driver has a licence from a country outside the European Economic Area, they unfortunately won't be able to rent on Getaround.

Requirements by Car Category

The vehicles are divided into three categories (economy, comfort, premium) based on their model and age. You can view the conditions required for your vehicle by going to Your cars > Relevant car > View listing, then Conditions required by Getaround. You have to check that these conditions are met during the licence check for each driver, and also check that the payment card used is in the name of the main driver and that it matches the rental agreement.

  • Economy category: the driver must have held a licence for at least two years and must be at least 21 years old.
  • Comfort category: the driver must have held a licence for at least two years and must be at least 25 years old.
  • Premium category: the driver must have held a licence for at least three years and must be at least 25 years old.

Each car gets moderated after it has been registered. If your vehicle is placed in the comfort or premium category, you will be informed by email.

To find out the category of your vehicle, go to Your cars > Manage your listing > Your conditions.
