Can I cancel my usual insurance policy if my car is only used for hire?

No, your vehicle must be covered by an annual insurance policy (with third-party cover as a minimum), in addition to the insurance offered by Getaround. If the authorities carry out a check, the driver will have to provide them with a copy of your insurance certificate. Parking/garage-type insurance is not accepted.

Can I opt out of Getaround’s insurance coverage if my own insurance policy allows me to lend my vehicle to other drivers?

No, you must use our specific insurance policy to hire out your vehicle via the platform. It is activated automatically as soon as the driver pays on the website, and applies from the start of the first half-day of the rental until the end of the last half-day of the rental.

Although insurers may allow you to lend your vehicle to friends or family members, as far as we know, there are no insurers that cover peer-to-peer hire. Hiring is a commercial transaction that is completely different to lending. If you hired out your vehicle without going through Getaround and an accident occurred, your insurer might refuse to cover you – which could void your personal cover. Your insurance premium would also go up in the event of an accident, which is not the case with Getaround’s insurance, and you would not be covered for theft by the driver, as you would have handed them the keys yourself.

My usual insurance policy has a mileage limit. Can I still hire out my vehicle?

If there is an annual mileage limit on your usual insurance policy (making the insurance cheaper for cars used less often), make sure that hiring out your car will not lead to the mileage limit being exceeded. You can find a summary of the distance travelled during your rentals in Your payments > Past payments > Excel export. It is best to contact your insurer directly and inform them of your intention to hire out your vehicle on Getaround, so they can confirm whether or not this is permitted.
