Drivy now hosts the largest leading round-trip car sharing fleet in Europe, with a service so convenient many are choosing to get rid of their personal vehicles

As 2019 begins, Drivy reveals the key achievements reached by the company in 2018. In particular, Drivy has grown to become the biggest round-trip car sharing service in Europe in terms of self-service fleet size. Drivy's fleet size surpasses all other competitors with 3400 Drivy Open cars that can be instantly booked and unlocked without a key through the Drivy app.

This figure highlights the evolution of Drivy over the past 12 months. Drivy is historically known for being a peer-to-peer car rental marketplace, but in 2018, the service focused efforts on app updates and growing the Drivy Open fleet with rental companies and fleet owners. Drivy is now able to provide its car sharing community with a even more frictionless car sharing experience, especially on shorter trips.

The evolution towards increased convenience also proved to have a positive impact on the travel habits of Drivy users. A study conducted in December on 1,157 Drivy users from 5 European countries (who rented an Open car at least once) revealed that 72% decided not to own a car and use Drivy instead, for convenience and affordability.

“We’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished last year”, says Paulin Dementhon, the founder and CEO of Drivy. “We’ve managed to expand our service from P2P car rental to seamless cars haring. 67% of the trips in our key cities are now made through our Drivy Open fleet, whose size now ranks us as the biggest round trip car sharing service in Europe. But most importantly, we’re thrilled by the positive environmental impact Drivy triggered within its community: not only 72% of our users that have tried Open in 2018 do not own a car today, but among them, 65% had one and decided to sell it to use Drivy instead, which actively participates to decrease congestion and pollution in the cities where they live”.

Drivy’s evolution from P2P car rental to seamless car sharing

In 2018, more 1.5 million days of rental were made through Drivy. In January 2019, Drivy became “Open first” as 52% of all Drivy rentals were self-serviced through a car equipped with Drivy Open. This figure that went up to an average of 67% in the key cities where Drivy operates (Paris, London, Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille and many more).

In parallel, the survey conducted in December showed that respondents that have rented at least one Drivy Open car in 2018 tend to use Drivy repeatedly, with an average of 5.9 rentals carried through the year.

Finally, Drivy users are now using the platform for shorter trips, as 61% use Drivy to get out of the city where they live during weekends or days off. In comparison, long holiday rentals only represent 31% of all use cases while business use in on the rise, with 18% of users already using Drivy for business.

All these figures clearly depict the evolution of Drivy from travel use cases of several days rentals towards car sharing, with a community of all ages - 40% of the users that have rented a Drivy Open once are more than 41 years-old - increasingly using Drivy as a viable and convenient substitute to owning a personal car. Among the respondents to the survey, 72% of them do not own a car.

This evolution has been made possible by two main factors:

  • The arrival of professional fleet owners on the platform that allowed Drivy to more than double its fleet of dedicated self-service shared cars to a total of 3,400 cars. This makes Drivy the largest round-trip car sharing service in Europe (in terms of fleet density).

  • Making shorter trips more convenient to book on the app. New features include: a map to display the cars around you, the ability to book a car for 4 hours, the instant booking feature and the Drivy Open filter.

An evolution that triggered a positive impact on Drivy’s users travel habits

The evolution from peer to peer car rental to car sharing positively impacted Drivy’s users mobility habits, making them considerably greener. The user study found that among the 72% of Drivy users that are currently car-free, 65% owned a car before and decided to sell it. Of the same group, 81% of them do not want to buy a car in the future, as they believe Drivy is more convenient and affordable than owning one. On a daily basis, Drivy users who don't own cars, also tend to have greener and more active transport habits, as they mostly walk (56%), use public transports (76%) or bike (31%) for everyday travel.

Furthermore, Drivy also has a positive impact on its 28% users that still own a car. In effect, 36% of them stated that Drivy prevented them from buying a second car while 14% of them already sold or plan to sell one of their cars to use Drivy instead. While 42% of users still own and keep their own personal car for convenience, 31% are more likely to use public transport on a daily basis.
